What is Welcome tax?

The “welcome tax”, also referred to as the “property transfer tax”, is an amount collected by a municipality when a property located within its borders is transferred. This tax allows municipalities to generate revenue from real estate transactions within their jurisdictions. The funds generated from the tax are used to support the Welcome Montreal program. This program provides crucial information and resources to newcomers to help them become acclimated to their new city.
